The Sails Behind the Legends
March 2025
Sailing has always been more than just a means of travel—it has shaped civilisations, driven exploration, and evolved into a pursuit of speed, skill, and craftsmanship. From the earliest ocean voyages to the golden age of yacht racing, the challenge of harnessing the wind has inspired innovation for centuries.
For over 230 years, Ratsey & Lapthorn has played a role in this evolution, crafting sails for some of the world’s most extraordinary yachts of various forms and sizes—each reflecting different eras, design philosophies, and competitive ambitions.
This month, we spotlight three remarkable yachts, each over 100 feet long and 100 years old, with their legacy on the water—built in different shipyards, sailed in different corners of the world, but all carrying our sails since their maiden voyages.Inside the sailmaker’s loft

The art of sailmaking dates back millennia, with Odysseus himself, according to Homer’s epic writings (circa 1000 B.C.), fashioning sails for his handmade vessel. Stranded on a lee shore, he built a boat with the assistance of Calypso, who provided the tools, cloth, and knowledge. Homer tells us that Odysseus “skillfully” crafted sails, complete with braces, halyards, and sheets.
This ancient craft remains deeply rooted in tradition and whilst materials have evolved beyond all recognition, many of the principles of the construction remain true.
Let’s take a tour around the sailmaker’s loft and explore five key elements of this age-old artistry:Reflecting on 2024 — Preserving Craftsmanship, Honouring Heritage

Dear Friends,
As 2024 draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting not only on the achievements of this year but on the rich history of Ratsey & Lapthorn—a journey spanning over two centuries. This year was not just a marker of progress but a reaffirmation of our dedication to the timeless craft of sailmaking.
Our sails have powered legendary vessels, witnessed historic races, and carried the spirit of craftsmanship across the seas. As we prepare for 2025, we revisit five pivotal moments in our history that define who we are today:
