Reflecting on 2024 — Preserving Craftsmanship, Honouring Heritage
Dear Friends,
As 2024 draws to a close, we find ourselves reflecting not only on the achievements of this year but on the rich history of Ratsey & Lapthorn—a journey spanning over two centuries. This year was not just a marker of progress but a reaffirmation of our dedication to the timeless craft of sailmaking.
Our sails have powered legendary vessels, witnessed historic races, and carried the spirit of craftsmanship across the seas. As we prepare for 2025, we revisit five pivotal moments in our history that define who we are today:
1790 The beginning of an iconic journey
George Rogers Ratsey establishes Ratsey sailmakers in Cowes, laying the foundation for a legacy of excellence. Within a decade, the loft crafts sails for HMS Victory. A fore topsail from that time still resides in the Naval Museum in Portsmouth.

1882 A Merger of masters
The Ratsey family from Cowes and the Lapthorn family from Gosport unite to form Ratsey & Lapthorn Ltd. This partnership brings together two illustrious sailmaking lineages, giving rise to an unparalleled legacy in the industry.

1902 Crossing the road
A new loft opens in New York City, commissioned to craft sails for the victorious Columbia in the America’s Cup. Ratsey & Lapthorn’s reputation grows, becoming the trusted choice on both sides of the Atlantic.

1934 A Legendary America’s Cup Campaign
In the most iconic America’s Cup of its time, Ratsey & Lapthorn sails power Endeavour and Rainbow. Though the Cup eludes Britain in an intense series, the campaign becomes the stuff of legend. A silver cigarette case, inscribed with “With grateful thanks for a gallant endeavour – America’s Cup 1934,” remains with us as a cherished symbol of resilience, craftsmanship, and competitive spirit.

2015 Returning to our roots
Ratsey & Lapthorn relocates to Somerton Works in Cowes, bringing its spiritual and manufacturing core under one of the largest unsupported wooden roofs in southern England.

A legacy that lives on
This year, we honoured this remarkable history by restoring iconic sails and continuing to innovate with our materials. From suiting classic yachts like Lady Anne, Gitana IV, and Mariska to supporting our best sailors at flagship regattas, our work reflects the spirit of excellence that defines Ratsey & Lapthorn.
As we step into 2025, we do so with gratitude for you—our supporters, collaborators, and sailors who trust us to be part of their journeys. Together, we’ll navigate new horizons, carrying the legacy of Ratsey & Lapthorn into the future with every stitch and every sail.
Thank you for being part of our story.
Warm regards,
The Ratsey & Lapthorn Team
