As the world’s oldest sailmaker, Ratsey & Lapthorn blends time-honoured skills with modern precision engineering. We create beautiful, perfectly fitting, and high-performing sails for some of the most celebrated boats on today's seas.
Master sailmakers
Every sail reflects Ratsey & Lapthorn’s expert craft, honed over centuries and elevated by the relentless spirit of innovation. Our experienced sailmakers provide a unique finish which may include narrow panels to replicate the original bolts of 18 or 27-inch cotton, cream cloth to emulate the colour of the original cotton, chestnut stitching to highlight the seams, and an array of hand-finishing techniques from rat's tails, hand-sewn rings, bolt ropes, leatherwork, and external cringles.

Tom W. Ratsey, 1833
Each new commission is a fine-tuned, modern interpretation of a classic sail that has all the aesthetic quality of an 18th-century original but designed to perform as a modern sail, whether at leisure or in a race. The materials and the technology may have evolved, but the commitment to excellence and the attention to detail remain the same.
Ratsey & Lapthorn understands intrinsically the need for cruising sails that are long-lasting, sturdy, and manageable. Encompassing all types of cruising, from coastal and off-shore to extreme latitudes, and from short to long-handed sailing, our approach is comprehensive and fully considered to ensure each sail is steadfast in all situations. Materials are selected with the utmost care for a tailor-made, voyage-ready sail. Whether it is the very best Dacrons for enhanced durability, or laminates and high-tenacity fibres for racer cruising, Ratsey & Lapthorn can meet your needs.
Ratsey & Lapthorn's trusted team of designers make and fit winning sails for classic and contemporary boats. Each sail is tailored to the specific needs of the team and the race. Whether it is an intricately rigged classic or a multi-mast vessel, we can partner with you. Using computer-aided design, we assess every aspect of a sail's performance for that critical competitive edge. Sails are laser-cut from laminates and woven fabrics, or carbon fabrics sourced from trusted partners. Ratsey & Lapthorn's sails have been winners for 225 years, suiting boats that include the America's Cup, J Class, One Designs, and Metre Class yachts.
Ratsey & Lapthorn specialises in crafting bespoke covers and awnings for a variety of applications. Our range of sailing covers, such as boom covers, awnings, full boat covers, and hardware and thatch covers, are tailored to meet the needs of our discerning clientele worldwide. We also work with private residences on a number of bespoke projects, as well as customers in the military, industrial and aerospace sectors.
Frequently asked questions
The answer is yes. The first step for the sailmaker is to understand the precise needs of the customer. Our designer will speak directly to the owner or captain to understand the brief, whether it is cruising or racing, short-handed or full-race crew. Sail design can often feel something of a dark art, so we at Ratsey & Lapthorn are here to help explain and offer advice to get the most from your setup.
We have a quote above our loft floor from Tom Ratsey in 1833: ‘There is only one standard of work in this loft and that is the very best’. This remains our guiding light, and we are one of the few remaining lofts that maintain the crafts and techniques that might take a little longer, but ensure the sail is built to last the test of time and perform to its best. As the oldest sailmaker in the world, we ‘suited’ many of the classics at their original launch and often have the original sail plans. This gives us an unrivalled insight into how the sails should be designed and the Ratsey & Lapthorn sail marque is a stamp of authority and quality.
There are certain elements that define a classic sail from a modern one. Not all of them are required or are appropriate for every yacht but typically these may include, narrow panels to replicate original bolts of 18 or 27-inch cotton, cream cloth to emulate the colour of original cotton, chestnut stitching to highlight the seams and an array of hand finishing techniques from rat’s tails, hand sewn rings, bolt ropes, leatherwork, and external cringles.
Being the world’s oldest sailmakers, our archives are somewhat extensive, and together with access to various online databases, there is a high chance we can find enough information to provide an instant quote. If the order proceeds to production, we will require these measurements to be verified, often by a visit in person to take exact dimensions allowing for any modifications that may have been made over the years.
We have detailed forms that consider basic measurements as well as details such as slides, bolt ropes etc. Whilst not required for the initial quote, we would require this to be completed before we commence production. This will either be undertaken in person by a representative of Ratsey & Lapthorn, or in certain circumstances, the customer can complete parts of this form. We are here on hand to guide you through this process.
We have a 10,000 sq ft facility in Cowes, UK, and a 4,000 sq ft facility in Barcelona, Spain. Sails are made from start to finish in these facilities. For specific jobs that require larger spaces or are location-specific, we can partner with other facilities around the world. Likewise, for non-woven constructions such as membrane sails, we successfully partner with manufacturers who make the membranes to our design and specification. Ratsey & Lapthorn sailmakers then construct and finish the sails in Cowes or Barcelona.
We hold a stock of certain fabrics and other materials to help reduce certain lead times. On average, construction is around 4-5 weeks depending on material availability and time of the year. April to August is our busy period and timeframes can be longer if orders are placed within this window.
Sails can be collected in person from our loft or we can organise local delivery for a nominal charge. For sails on the mainland or overseas we partner with DHL and can organise the shipping plus any duties or customs paperwork required. Delivery costs are passed on at cost. Shipping crates can be organised if required, otherwise sails are packed in their sail bags, boxed, and then wrapped in plastic.
Sails delivered outside the UK can be free from UK VAT if an EU VAT number is provided. Otherwise, the VAT can be claimed back if bought through a UK VAT-registered entity.
Whilst Brexit initially presented some challenges, we have found the process has become considerably easier. In addition, we have our loft in Barcelona which also alleviates many of the issues related to Brexit.

You are very welcome to visit the loft and meet the sailmakers while we construct your sail. We value the direct relationship with our clients and your input can often be invaluable in the sailmaking process. All we kindly request is that this be done by appointment.
We offer a standard two-year guarantee for all our sails. This provides a warranty against manufacturing and material defects. This does not include any damage that has occurred through misuse or poor seamanship.
Upon confirmation of your order, a 50% deposit is requested to progress the design process and secure the materials. This will be invoiced and can be paid online or by most debit or credit cards. Upon completion of the order, the balance invoice is raised including any shipping costs.
We are proud of our customer service. We are happy to discuss setting your sails and even sailing with you to ensure you get the most from your purchase.
For the first two years, your sails will be covered by our warranty and we also provide a full repair and service proposition that you can access.
Whilst white makes up most sails in the market, we at Ratsey & Lapthorn can provide you with a range of other colours. Classic sails are often a cream colour to replicate the colour of cotton canvas. Working boats often require a tan or russet red, which is the traditional colour originally used to prevent rot and UV damage.
Spinnakers typically come in a range of colours and designs and we can discuss this and the application of logos and emblems when required.
No, but we have long-established relationships with naval architects and riggers and we work hand in hand with them regularly.
No. Whilst we are the oldest sailmaker in the world, the skills required for the craft of sailmaking are transferable to a number of other products. We make awnings and covers for boats but also for domestic or business applications. We work closely with the military and a host of industrial clients. We are a regular supplier to the film and TV industry and our sails have starred in a variety of well-known productions. Please contact our team to discuss your requirements, however unusual they may be.
